It is no coincidence that the landing page of Microsoft 365 has been Copilot for many months. And I don’t believe it’s just a pressure tactic to push more Copilot usage.
The History of the Cockpit
In my role as a consultant, Outlook was my work cockpit for many years - media-centric work, driven by my inbox. Over the last seven years, Microsoft Teams took over - topic-centric work, self-directed focus, fewer context switches. What’s next? I believe Copilot will take on this role.

Just as this evolution hasn’t been the same for every role and function, many people still have different needs and a different focus - perhaps an ERP or CRM system, a specialized application, or an intranet as their cockpit. These can usually be embedded in Teams to reduce context switching and support focused flow, but this is rarely implemented consistently. Looking forward, the still relatively rigid structure of Teams and permanently embedded third-party systems in channels will become significantly more flexible and uncomplicated through M365 Copilot and AI’s contextual understanding.
The Transformation of the Work Interface
Copilot as “The UI for AI” - the user interface for AI and thus potentially all my data and applications - has the potential to comprehensively transform how we access our work. So far, we see AI as an assistant in our familiar workflows or, more advanced, as agents to which we can delegate entire pieces of work that we supervise, control, and process further.
What if we shift the perspective even further and make AI the cockpit - the place where we direct all our information needs, where we articulate what needs to be done, and which then selects and executes the tools and work steps that lead to the goal?
Welcome, Copilot Cowork
At the end of March 2026, Microsoft released Copilot Cowork into the wild. Through the Frontier Program - the early public testing of new developments - we can now try out how AI penetrates, organizes, and handles longer and more complex workflows on its own, all directly with our data and context in our controlled and secured M365 world.
A caveat for Europe: There is the significant limitation that hardly anyone in Europe considers the risk acceptable of activating the Anthropic models in their own tenant, since data processing is not guaranteed to take place within the EU. And Cowork currently only works with these models, as it is based on Claude Cowork.
Frontier Features are not declared production-ready and can disappear at any time. So for now, Cowork serves to experiment in test environments to explore what’s possible and what the future could look like. But much of what this new work cockpit promises is already possible today with generally available Copilot features in M365:
- Questions about data, processes, content - with my entire work context (WorkIQ)
- Creating and editing documents and content - editing with Copilot in Office apps, creating in the Copilot App
- Defining and inferring topics/contexts across Teams, SharePoint sites, and other content (Copilot Notebooks)
- Orchestrating agents and workflows for sub-tasks (Copilot App and agents on demand in chat)
Outlook
While until 2018 Outlook occupied most of my screen time, today Teams is increasingly being displaced by the Copilot App, where I direct conversations, agents, and contexts that increasingly take over or at least assist and accelerate work steps. Already now, Copilot is transforming the interface because it is so much easier to talk to it and free yourself from the keyboard. Cowork could be the next big step forward - and I’m very curious to see where this goes.
Es ist kein Zufall, dass die Startseite von Microsoft 365 seit vielen Monaten Copilot ist. Allerdings glaube ich nicht, dass es nur ein Druckmittel ist, mehr Nutzung von Copilot zu forcieren.

In meiner Rolle als Berater war viele Jahre lang Outlook mein Arbeitscockpit (medienzentriertes Arbeiten, Ich als Getriebener meines Posteingangs). Die letzten sieben Jahre war dann Microsoft Teams mein Arbeitscockpit (themezentriertes Arbeiten, selbstbestimmter Fokus, weniger Kontextwechsel). What’s next? Ich denke, Copilot wird diese Rolle übernehmen.

Ebenso, wie diese Entwicklung bisher nicht für alle Rollen und Funktionen gleich verlaufen ist, haben auch weiterhin viele Menschen bei ihrer Arbeit andere Bedarfe, anderen Fokus als ich - etwa eher ein ERP- oder CRM-System, eine Fachanwendung, ein Intranet als Cockpit. Diese lassen sich meist auch schon themenzentriert in Teams einbinden, um Kontextwechsel zu reduzieren und den konzentrierten Flow zu unterstützen, aber das wird relativ selten konsequent umgesetzt. Nach vorne geblickt wird die noch immer verhältnismäßig starre Struktur von Teams und fest eingebundenen Drittsystemen in Kanälen durch den M365 Copilot und das Kontextverständnis von KI erheblich flexibler, unkomplizierter.
Die Transformation der Schnittstelle zur Arbeit
Copilot als „The UI for AI“ - die Nutzenden-Schnittstelle für KI und damit potenziell alle meine Daten und Anwendungen - hat das Zeug, den Zugang zu unserer Arbeit umfassend zu transformieren. Bisher sehen wir KI als Assistenz in unseren gewohnten Arbeitsabläufen oder fortgeschrittener als Agenten, denen wir ganze Teilstücke von Arbeit überlassen können, die wir beaufsichtigen, kontrollieren, weiterverarbeiten.
Was, wenn wir die Perspektive noch etwas weiter verändern und die KI zum Cockpit machen, an das wir alle unsere Informationsbedarfe stellen, über das wir formulieren, was zu tun ist, und das dann die Werkzeuge und Arbeitsschritte wählt und ausführt, die zum Ziel führen?
Willkommen Copilot Cowork
Ende März 2026 hat Microsoft Copilot Cowork in die freie Wildbahn geschickt. Im Frontier Programm, der frühen öffentlichen Verprobung neuer Entwicklungen, können wir nun ausprobieren, wie KI längere und komplexere Arbeitsabläufe selbst durchdringt, ordnet und abwickelt - und das alles direkt mit unseren Daten und unserem Kontext in unserer kontrollierten und gesicherten M365-Welt.
Einschränkung für Europa: Mit der kleinen, aber erheblichen Einschränkung, dass in Europa kaum jemand das Risiko als akzeptabel einschätzt, die Anthropic Modelle im eigenen Tenant zu aktivieren, da die Datenverarbeitung nicht gesichert in der EU stattfindet. Und Cowork funktioniert vorerst nur mit diesen Modellen, da es auf Claude Cowork basiert.
Frontier Features sind ohnehin nicht als produktionsreif deklariert und können jederzeit auch wieder verschwinden. Insofern dient Cowork erstmal dazu, mit Testumgebungen auszuprobieren, was möglich ist und wie eine Zukunft aussehen könnte. Vieles des skizzierten neuen Arbeitscockpits ist aber heute schon mit den allgemein verfügbaren Funktionen von Copilot in M365 möglich:
- Fragen zu Daten, Vorgängen, Inhalten - mit meinem gesamten Arbeitskontext (WorkIQ)
- Erstellen und Ändern, Verarbeiten von Dokumenten und Inhalten (Bearbeiten mit Copilot in Office Apps, Erstellen in der Copilot App)
- Definition und Inferenz eigener Themen/Kontexte über Teams, SharePoint Sites und andere Inhalte hinweg (Copilot Notebooks)
- Orchestrierung von Agenten und definierter Workflows für Teilaufgaben (Copilot App und Agenten nach Bedarf im Chat)
Ausblick
Während bis 2018 also die meiste Zeit Outlook meinen Bildschirm einnahm, wird heute bereits zusehends Teams verdrängt durch die Copilot App, in der ich Konversationen, Agenten und Kontexte dirigiere, die mir zusehends Arbeitsschritte abnehmen oder zumindest dabei assistieren und sie beschleunigen. Schon jetzt transformiert Copilot dabei die Schnittstelle, weil es so viel einfacher ist, mit ihm zu reden und sich von der Tastatur zu befreien. Cowork könnte der nächste große Schritt nach vorne sein - und ich bin sehr gespannt, wie das weitergeht.
